Chennai Metro submits detailed project report for 15.46 km Phase-1 extension

The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has submitted a revised Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Phase-1 extension from the Airport to Kilambakkam Bus Terminal. The 15.46 km corridor, integrated with an elevated road, will enhance connectivity to key transport hubs. The project, estimated at Rs. 9,335 crore, includes 13 elevated stations.


DPR Submission & Key Modifications:

The revised DPR was handed over by Mr. M.A. Siddique, I.A.S., Principal Secretary to Government and Managing Director, CMRL, to Mr. Dr. K. Gopal, I.A.S., Additional Chief Secretary, Special Initiatives, Government of Tamil Nadu. The original DPR was revised following government directives to integrate metro construction with an elevated road.

As per the updated plan:

  • The metro corridor will be constructed at Level-2, while the elevated road will be at Level-1.
  • Intermediate ramps near Tambaram will provide connectivity to the Outer Ring Road (ORR).
  • The elevated road will directly connect inside Kilambakkam Bus Terminal, with future provisions for an extension to Chengalpattu.

Connectivity & Route Details:

The proposed metro extension will run along a 15.46 km stretch, passing through Pallavaram, Chrompet, Tambaram, Perungalathur, and Vandalur, key locations enhancing accessibility between:

  • Kilambakkam Bus Terminal
  • Chennai Airport
  • Tambaram Railway Station

Project Features & Cost Estimates:

  • Total Length: 15.46 km
  • Number of Elevated Stations: 13
  • Estimated Project Cost: Rs. 9,335 Crore (Including Elevated Road)

Conclusion:

The revised DPR ensures a seamless integration of metro and road infrastructure, improving last-mile connectivity for commuters. Once completed, the Airport-Kilambakkam metro extension will significantly enhance Chennai’s transport network, reducing congestion and providing efficient transit solutions for residents and travelers across the corridor.
