Chennai Metro Phase 2: Piling works completed on 8 km stretch of Corridor 4

The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) achieved a significant milestone in Phase 2, completing 100% of piling works on the 8km stretch of Corridor 4 (ECV-01) between Kodambakkam Powerhouse and Porur Junction. This achievement included overcoming utility diversions and engineering challenges, ensuring progress for the 5 Single Decker and 4 Double Decker stations in the project.

Details of the Achievement:

The stretch includes 5 Single Decker and 4 Double Decker stations requiring 2,255 piles to support its structural load. The pile foundations, designed as deep foundations, ensure efficient load transfer to the ground at desired depths, forming the backbone of this corridor’s infrastructure.

Challenges Overcome:

The project team and contractors faced significant challenges, such as diverting 24.45km of utilities and redesigning pile layouts to protect critical infrastructure, including a 1,200mm water line. Notably, the diversion of a massive 1,500mm water line was accomplished without disrupting the water supply, showcasing exemplary engineering and planning.

Team Recognition:

The milestone was celebrated in the presence of key stakeholders, including Thiru. T. Archunan, Director (Projects), CMRL, Thiru. S. Ashok Kumar, CGM (T & EC), Tmt. Rekha Prakash, CGM (P & D), Thiru. Murugamoorthy, Team Leader (GC2-AEON), and Thiru. Jayaraman, Project Director, L&T, along with senior officials and contractors.

Conclusion:

This milestone underlines CMRL’s commitment to timely and efficient project execution despite engineering and logistical challenges. The successful completion of piling works for Corridor 4 is a significant step in realising the broader vision of Phase 2, aimed at enhancing Chennai’s metro connectivity and improving urban mobility for its citizens.
