Chennai Metro Phase-2: KEC completes U-Girder erection for 8.28 km viaduct on Corridor-4

Chennai Metro Rail Phase-II reached a significant milestone with the successful erection of the 624th and final U-girder between Poonamallee Bypass and Porur Junction on March 8, 2025. Executed by KEC International, this achievement completes the 8.28 km viaduct for Corridor 4, enhancing metro connectivity and urban transit infrastructure in Chennai.


KEC International’s Role in Completing the 8.28 km Viaduct:

KEC International played a pivotal role in constructing the 8.28 km viaduct under the C4 ECV 02 project of CMRL Phase-II. With the erection of the last U-girder, the project has now completed all precast elements and steel girders, ensuring structural readiness for the next phases of metro development. This engineering feat underscores KEC International’s expertise in executing large-scale metro infrastructure projects efficiently.

Final U-Girder Erection at Kumananchavadi Station:

  • The last U-girder was strategically installed between piers SP-04-05 at Kumananchavadi Station during the early hours to minimize traffic disruptions.
  • Authorities managed traffic flow effectively by diverting vehicles to one side of the road, ensuring smooth execution of the operation.
  • The meticulous planning and seamless coordination between CMRL, the General Consultant (GC), and KEC International were instrumental in achieving this success.

A Special Tribute on International Women’s Day:

Coinciding with International Women’s Day, this milestone held special significance as women engineers and professionals actively contributed to the project. Their hard work and dedication were recognized and honored, highlighting the increasing role of women in India’s metro infrastructure development. The event underscored CMRL’s commitment to fostering gender diversity in engineering and urban transit projects.

With this accomplishment, the project has successfully installed:

  • 3202 precast concrete elements
  • 164 steel girders, including 2 Open Web Girders

These components, erected across the Tambaram – Maduravoyal Bypass, have significantly advanced the project’s timeline, bringing the completion of the elevated viaduct closer to reality.

Impact on Chennai’s Metro Connectivity:

The completion of the viaduct is a crucial step in the progress of Chennai Metro’s 26.1 km Corridor 4, which will seamlessly connect Light House Station to the Poonamallee Depot. Once operational, this corridor will provide a faster, safer, and more sustainable transportation option, easing congestion and improving urban mobility in the city.

CMRL Awards Contract to v-shesh Learning Services Pvt. Ltd.:

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) also signed a key contract to review and enhance the design of 15 Phase II metro stations, ensuring universal accessibility for all commuters, including persons with disabilities. The contract, valued at INR 13.50 lakhs (excluding GST), has been awarded to M/s v-shesh Learning Services Private Limited.

The project will be completed within 180 days and aligns with India’s Harmonized Guidelines for Universal Accessibility. v-shesh, known for its expertise in accessibility solutions, previously conducted an access audit of 32 Phase I metro stations, reinforcing CMRL’s commitment to inclusive and equitable public transportation.
