Chennai Metro assigns Rs. 1.34 crore DPR contracts to SYSTRA MVA for MRTS expansion in Chennai

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has awarded a dual consultancy contract to SYSTRA MVA Consulting (India) Pvt. Ltd. to expand the transit network in the state. The Rs. 1.34 crore contracts involve Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for new MRTS corridors, Lighthouse–High Court via Secretariat and Tambaram–Guindy via Velachery are the areas that will help in accelerating connectivity in the region.


Introduction:

In a strategic move toward expanding the existing metro network and enhancing urban mobility, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has awarded two consultancy contracts to SYSTRA MVA Consulting (India) Pvt. Ltd. for preparing Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for proposed new corridors under the Chennai Metro network.

These advancements come as part of CMRL’s commitment to improve mass transit accessibility across highly populated and underserved regions of Chennai.

Contract Overview:

Lighthouse to High Court via Secretariat – Phase-2 Extension

  • Scope: Preparation of a DPR for a new MRTS corridor extending the Phase-2 network from Lighthouse to High Court via the Secretariat. It will be a part of Corridor-4 From Lighthouse to Poonamalle Bypass (26.1 Km).
  • Purpose: This corridor aims to improve direct connectivity across key government and commercial zones in the heart of Chennai.
  • Contract Value: Rs. 38.20 lakh
  • Expected Outcome: Eases travel between Marina Beach and the city’s administrative core, helping to reduce congestion in arterial roads and minmise carbon emissions.

Tambaram to Guindy via Velachery – Network Expansion

  • Scope: DPR preparation for an MRTS corridor from Tambaram to Guindy, passing through Velachery, a high-demand suburban-commercial route.
  • Purpose: To serve the high commuter traffic between the southern suburbs and central Chennai with efficient and fast metro access.
  • Contract Value: Rs. 96.19 lakh
  • Expected Outcome: Better integration of Chennai’s southern belt with its metro grid, accelerating last-mile connectivity and passenger convenience.

Strategic Significance:

The step to extend the Chennai Metro Rail network through these two corridors is timely, aligning with the city’s urban planning goals and growing demand for sustainable transport options.
