Chandigarh: The Centre will seek a fresh proposal from the UT administration to assess the Chandigarh Metro project viability once again, Union Minister for Housing & Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri said, on Wednesday. Puri was in the city to participate in a financial inclusion camp at Sector 17.
He said,“Today, every city wants Metro, but as far as Chandigarh is concerned, we will check its viability by studying the Detailed Project Report (DPR) according to the new policy.”
The metro project will cost around Rs 13,600 crore (approx US$ 2092.3 Million) & Chandigarh’s share will be around Rs 5,000 crore (approx US$ 769.2 Million), according to the revised DPR prepared by the DMRC (Delhi Metro Rail Corporation).
The total length of the Metro rail project is 37.57km.
New Metro Rail Policy
Last month, the Union government had come out with a new metro policy, wherein it will approve & aid metro rail projects only if they have private participation & ensure last-mile connectivity for users.
Under the new policy, states will get powers to make rules & regulations & set up permanent fare fixation authorities.
