Alstom powers Indore Metro operations with Movia trains and advanced CBTC system

Alstom celebrates the launch of Indore Metro’s services, using its advanced Movia metro trains and CBTC signalling system. Under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, these trains were manufactured in Gujarat and poised to provide better travel experience with its advanced technology and eco-friendly mobility. More than 6 million residents will get this service across Indore and Bhopal.


Introduction:

Indore is advancing towards modern public transportation facilities, PM Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the Super Priority Corridor of Indore Metro. Alstom plays a crucial role in achieving this milestone as it supplies the advanced Movia metro trains equipped with top-notch CBTC signalling technology. The services start at the corridor a day after the inauguration, providing thousands of commuters a safe and convenient mode of transportation.

Alstom achieved a major milestone with this project, reinforcing its position as the global leader in smart and sustainable mobility. It aligns with India’s ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives, making Alstom a prominent supplier in the urban transit industry. 

Made in India, Built for the Future:

Movia trainsets were engineered and manufactured at Alstom’s state-of-the-art facility in Savli, Gujarat. Manufacturing the first trainset took 14.5 months which in itself is a record for the efficiency and timely delivery by Alstom, it was directly delivered to the Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL) in August 2023. These trains are designed to operate at speeds of up to 80 km/h, running across Indore’s 31.5 km line with 29 stations.

Each 3-car train has a seating capacity for 50 and standing space for 300 passengers, optimizing comfort, efficiency, and capacity. Currently, 14 trainsets have been supplied to Indore and 8 to Bhopal.

A Comprehensive Urban Mobility Package:

Under a combined contract for Indore and Bhopal metro projects, Alstom’s scope of work includes:

  • Designing, manufacturing, and commissioning 52 three-car trainsets
  • Installation of CBTC signalling, train control, and telecommunication systems
  • 7 years of maintenance for these systems
  • 15 years of FlexCare Perform maintenance services

Of the total trainsets, 25 are dedicated to Indore, providing high frequency and reliability across the city’s metro network.

Safety, Sustainability & Passenger Comfort:

These air-conditioned metro coaches are part of Alstom’s globally successful Metropolis range, known for encompassing cutting-edge technology with a passenger-centric design. Features include:

  • Eco-design with non-toxic materials
  • Energy-efficient traction and regenerative braking systems
  • Smart lighting solutions to reduce energy consumption
  • Train Control and Management System (TCMS) with automatic track inspection
  • CCTV surveillance, real-time communication channels, and AI-driven safety features such as unattended object detection
  • Dedicated wheelchair space for passengers with reduced mobility

Together, these innovations allow a safer, greener, and more inclusive travel experience.

Proven Technology, Global Impact:

Alstom’s Movia metros and CBTC technology are trusted nationwide. The company has installed CBTC signalling systems on 190 metro lines in 32 countries, including metros in London, Delhi, Stockholm, Mumbai, and Singapore. For Indore, Alstom introduced Urbalis Forward, a next-generation CBTC system that improves operational efficiency, boosts frequency, and supports future capacity growth.

The system is designed to maximize throughput, lower wait times, and ensure a seamless passenger experience in an increasingly connected city.
