Agra Metro achieves milestone with successful erection of first U-Girder on ISBT–Sikandara section of Corridor-1

The Agra Metro project has marked a significant construction milestone with the successful erection of its first U-Girder on the ISBT–Sikandara balance section. This 28-meter-long, 160-ton structure is a vital step toward building the elevated viaduct along Corridor-1, reinforcing progress toward the timely completion of the metro line.

Introduction:

The erection of the first U-Girder for the ISBT–Sikandara balance section represents a significant engineering accomplishment for the Agra Metro project. With 28m long, 160-ton U-Girders forming the elevated viaduct, the construction team is demonstrating rapid progress on Corridor-1.

Corridor-1 Overview:

  • Corridor-1 of the Agra Metro stretches from Sikandara to Taj East Gate (Hotel Trident), running parallel to NH-2.
  • The alignment begins approximately 105 meters before Akbar’s Tomb in Sikandara and progresses eastward as an elevated track.

Sikandara Metro Station:

Sikandara Station, the western terminal of Corridor-1, is an elevated structure planned about 200 meters from the Sikandara Monument. Designed with an island platform and rail level 12 meters above ground, the station ensures connectivity to local neighborhoods such as Krishnapuram, Mahadev Pur, and Awas Vikas Colony, while respecting ASI guidelines for heritage proximity.

ISBT Metro Station:

Located near the existing Inter State Bus Terminal (ISBT), this elevated metro station is integrated with current bus facilities. It is strategically planned to serve as a terminal if extension beyond is not permitted due to proximity to protected ASI monuments. Key features include foot overbridge access, stabling lines, and future-ready infrastructure for high passenger flow.

Urban Integration:

Both stations are designed for seamless multimodal integration. The ISBT station includes designated drop-off zones, feeder transport bays, 2-meter-wide footpaths, traffic signage, and pedestrian safety infrastructure to minimize congestion and improve urban mobility.

Conclusion:

The successful erection of the first U-Girder is a clear indicator of the Agra Metro’s determined progress. With structural milestones being met and thoughtful station designs prioritizing connectivity, safety, and heritage preservation, Corridor-1 is steadily moving closer to transforming urban transit across Agra’s key residential, commercial, and cultural zones.
