MMRDA has achieved a major engineering milestone with the successful launch of a 65-meter composite steel girder near Bhayandar West ROB. The work was done for Mumbai Metro Line-9 during night as the traffic at that time is low, it showcases MMRDA’s commitment to accelerate infrastructure development in Mumbai. Even with the limited time the MMRDA team has achieved this feat due to their impeccable coordination and strong dedication towards urban growth.
Introduction:
In a major stride towards urban infrastructure development, MMRDA has launched a 65-meter-long composite steel girder near Bhayandar West Road Over Bridge (ROB). This was a part of the Metro Line-9 project, aiming to enhance urban connectivity, accelerate passenger’s travel convenience and reduce congestion in the area.
Mumbai Metro Line-9 plays an important role in boosting the connectivity of the city, it links Dahisar (East) to Mira Bhayandar spanning 10.54 kilometers. The project is advancing rapidly with 95% of work already completed, the operation of service at the area will change the city’s western suburban commute with safer, faster and sustainable options.
Key Project Details:
- Corridor Length- 10.54 km
- No. of Stations- 8 elevated stations
- Project Progress- 95% overall completion
- Metro Line-9 is a key extension of the 337.10 km MMRDA Metro Master Plan.
Girder Launch Specifications:
- Steel Girder Dimensions–
- Length: 65 meters
- Width: 9.575 meters
- Weight: 700 metric tonnes (approx.)
- Length: 65 meters
- Structure Segmentation–
- Divided into 3 parts
- Each weighing approx. 235 MT with a depth of over 3 meters
- Divided into 3 parts
- Location– Spreading across Western Railway line, a highly populated and operationally sensitive zone at Bhayandar (West).
Execution & Coordination:
- The girder launch was completed during restricted night blocks on 7th, 8th, and 11th June 2025, each lasting just 1.5 hours.
- Operations were supported by high-capacity cranes:
- One 600MT and one 750MT crane were deployed
- A standby 600MT crane was also kept ready as a backup
- The task involved seamless multi-agency collaboration including:
- Western Railway
- Konkan Railway
- Local Traffic Police
- MMRDA’s internal engineering teams and contractors
- Western Railway
MMRDA is showing with this accomplishment that it is technologically capable of achieving the infrastructure results. Its focus was to use advanced technologies to build sustainable infrastructure in the congested areas.
Operational Timeline:
- Phase I (Dahisar East – Kashigaon)– Targeted for December 2025
- Phase II (Kashigaon – Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose [NSCB])– Expected completion by December 2026
Once completed, Metro Line-9 will majorly decongest road traffic and provide an efficient mass transit solution for commuters in Mumbai.
Conclusion:
The successful launch of the 65-meter steel girder on Metro Line-9 showcases the engineering prowess and strategic coordination driving MMRDA’s metro expansion. As the project nears completion, it is poised to reinforce mobility across the Dahisar–Mira Bhayandar section, strengthening Mumbai’s journey toward a smarter and more sustainable transit future.
