Mumbai Metro Line-4: MMRDA completes critical steel span erection on Ghodbunder road

In a significant step, MMRDA has completed the erection of a crucial 55-meter-long Special Steel Span on Ghodbunder Road. The project comes under Metro Line 4 (Package CA-12), the work completion enables Phase 1 commissioning. 550 MT cranes are used specifically for the erection of the steel span, the project was executed at night because of the Mumbai traffic. The work is accomplished because of the engineering precision and the outstanding coordination of workers and the Thane Police.


Introduction:

Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has successfully achieved erection of a Special Steel Span on Metro Line 4’s Package CA-12. The completion of the work started the Phase 1 commissioning, it aims to enhance travel convenience of the commuters, better decongestion and improved connectivity.

Heavy-lift cranes with  550 MT capacity are specifically used for accomplishing the precise infrastructure result. The precise strategy, advanced technology, continuous effort of the team and the coordination between the team are the reasons that make it possible for MMRDA to achieve the milestone.

  • Type: Composite I Plate Girder
  • Length: 55 meters
  • Height: 3.10 meters
  • Erection Height: 21 meters
  • Total Weight: 405 metric tonnes (including cross bracing)
  • Location: Ghodbunder Road, Thane

The location is a critical spot as it is a busy area, so the solution needed was a precise strategic planning with execution with the expertise. Ghodbunder Road was a place which needed the steel span as the area always received high footfalls. The work was completed by the team at night because of the lease traffic and little interruptions by the public at that time.

  • Interlinks with Central Railway, Eastern Express Highway, and Monorail
  • Connect with ongoing Metro Lines 2B, 5, and 6
  • Accelerate rail access to commercial, government, and residential areas all over Mumbai

This corridor is vital for lowering the travel time of the commuters by 50–75%, it is allowing commutes for lakhs of people daily in Mumbai.
