Mumbai Metro Line-3 introduces QR ticketing and NCMC for seamless travel

Mumbai Metro Line 3 (Aqua line) has achieved a major milestone by collaborating with the ONDC network, ensuring passengers can book QR-based tickets through popular apps. Alongside, the launch of the RuPay-powered National Common Mobility Card enhances contactless, cashless metro travel, aligning with India’s goal of unified and inclusive urban mobility.

Introduction:

In a major step toward digital and inclusive urban mobility, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) has officially integrated Metro Line 3 (Colaba–Bandra–SEEPZ corridor) with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC). This marks a transformative step in how Mumbai’s commuters access and experience metro travel.

ONDC Integration – Seamless QR Ticketing:

The collaboration with ONDC enables QR-based ticketing through various popular consumer applications, removing the need for multiple metro-specific apps or physical ticket counters. Commuters on Line-3 can now book metro tickets using buyer apps like EaseMyTrip, Highway Delite, Miles & Kilometres (via Telegram), OneTicket, RedBus, Tummoc, and Yatri – City Travel Guide.

Notably, the OneTicket app provides an interoperable platform, allowing passengers to plan and complete journeys across multiple metro corridors, including Mumbai Metro Lines 1, 2A, 3, and 7 — enhancing end-to-end connectivity in the city.

This integration shows ONDC’s aim of democratizing digital commerce by enabling equal access and interoperability across platforms, services, and consumer segments.

Launch of NCMC – A Unified Travel Solution:

Simultaneously, the Mumbai Metro introduced the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) for Line-3. Powered by RuPay, and launched in collaboration with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and State Bank of India (SBI), the NCMC allows contactless, cashless, and cross-platform travel for commuters across different transit modes.

The NCMC was unveiled in a special ceremony attended by Hon’ble Chief Minister of Maharashtra Shri Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Ministers Shri Eknath Shinde & Shri Ajit Pawar, Revenue Minister Shri Chandrashekhar Bawankule, Chief Secretary Smt. Sujata Saunik, MMRC MD Smt. Ashwini Bhide, and Shri Rajeev, Director (Systems).

This card supports tap-and-go payments, reducing transaction times and creating a seamless travel experience, consistent with the Government of India’s ‘One Nation, One Card’ vision.

Insight:

Ms. Ashwini Bhide, Managing Director, MMRCL, said, “Integration of Metro Line-3 with the ONDC platform is a landmark step toward building a truly interoperable and inclusive urban mobility ecosystem. By enabling QR-based ticketing through multiple trusted apps, we are not only enhancing commuter convenience but also contributing to the broader vision of a digitally connected India.”

Conclusion:

The twin introduction of ONDC integration and NCMC on Mumbai Metro Line 3 showcases accessible, efficient, and digitally empowered public transit. By aligning with national digital policies and improving commuter convenience, MMRCL is helping shape a smarter and more connected urban mobility framework for India’s financial capital.
