Maha Metro and NHAI have signed an MoU to construct integrated Metro viaducts on NH-44 and NH-53 in Nagpur. The integrated viaduct will improve metro infrastructure without cutting off the highways, it will reduce operational costs and boost efficiency. The collaboration will play a vital role in reinforcing Nagpur as the multimodal transport hub.
Introduction:
In a bold initiative to accelerate urban mobility and infrastructure efficiency in Nagpur, Maha Metro and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) have officially inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The partnership will improve the transport infrastructure system by constructing metro Viaducts on the section of National Highways 44 and 53 in the city of Nagpur.
In NHAI’s regional office in Nagpur, the contract signing took place. Several senior officials are present during the ceremony including, Shri Rakesh Prakash Dasang (Chief General Manager & Regional Officer, NHAI), Shri Naresh Gurbani, and Shri R. Arun Kumar (Executive Directors, Maha Metro).
Key Highlights of the MoU:
- Shared Use of Right of Way (RoW):
Maha Metro has been granted access to use the Right of Way (RoW) on two major national highway corridors–
- NH-44: From Jamtha to Butibori
- NH-53: From HB Town to Transport Nagar
This shared RoW ensures the construction of elevated Metro viaducts directly on these highways, significantly optimizing land use.
Integrated Infrastructure – Flyovers + Metro:
A major innovation in the MoU is the proposal to build integrated infrastructure. At critical junctions such as Jamtha and Dongargaon, six-lane flyovers will be constructed in tandem with Metro viaducts, forming a single unified structure.
This dual-purpose development will not only save costs and construction time but also minimize disruptions to traffic during execution.
Efficient Engineering & Public Utility:
The joint project emphasizes–
- Effective space utilization with combined Metro, flyover, and underpass functionalities
- Strict adherence to IRC guidelines, including a minimum vertical clearance of 6 meters for road expansion
- Commitment to safety, with joint inspections, utility shifting coordination, and traffic management protocols in place
Future-Focused Urban Planning:
This partnership is a visionary step towards integration of the national highway development and metro expansion. Both the central (NHAI) and state (Maha Metro) authorities will put their experience and expertise to build a transport infrastructure that will boost urban mobility in Nagpur.
Conclusion:
The signing of the MoU between Maha Metro and NHAI showcases the centre as well as states commitment towards building multimodal and sustainable infrastructure in Nagpur. This marks a benchmark for the infrastructure collaboration in the country, it reinforces the infrastructure efficiency in the best possible way without hindering the operation of other transport systems.
